Due to a popular demand during our 2012 Heritage Open Days, Carol McDonald has decided to launch a range of cards and associated artwork under the 'Hillsidehomespun' label. Definitely a must for those who either have a Shepherd's hut, aspire to one or just love the nostalgia that an image of an original hut conjures in the mind.
Carol studied art as part of her Honours Degree, and followed this with a Diploma in Art and Design at the UEA in Norwich. Teaching at Barford Primary School from 1978-98, Carol achieved her ambition of obtaining her own watercolour studio in 2003, in the form of a Shepherd's hut from behind the farm just across the road the School where she taught.
With open vistas and endless Norfolk skies viewed from the hut over-looking the upper Yare valley, subject matter always close at hand with Harriet and Daisy, her two Indian Runner Ducks often hiding under the hut, ready to dart out after a passing fly. To compliment the menagerie a flock of Petticoat wielding Pekin hens patrol the raised beds, chaperoned by Dot, the inquisitive
matriarchal ex-battery hen.
Carol's artistic involvement proved a real asset even before the hut was rescued, having recorded its form where it had rested for so many years, then sketching its structure as decay was peeled away to enable a new lease of life. This interest in huts and their environment, has led to the release of the first of a collection of images taken from Carol's water colours.
